Meghan Markle’s Father Arrested on Federal Child Sexual Abuse Material Charge

Thomas Wayne Markle, the 82-year-old father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was arrested in Florida on Friday, November 6, on a federal charge of possessing child sexual abuse material. The charge is an allegation, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

What authorities have confirmed

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California announced that Markle, of Lakeland, Florida, faces one count of possession of child pornography, the offense named in the criminal complaint.

According to prosecutors, FBI agents searched two Los Angeles-area storage units that Markle had rented since 2008. They reported seizing approximately 78 items, including slides, film negatives and books, containing suspected child sexual abuse material. Authorities allege that some photographs depict Markle with minor girls. Those assertions have not been proven at trial.

The DOJ said the investigation followed information concerning suspected material among his belongings in the Philippines. If convicted, Markle faces a statutory maximum of 20 years in federal prison, according to the department.

Court appearance and denial

Reuters reported that Markle appeared before a federal magistrate judge in Tampa, entered no plea and was released under home detention with electronic monitoring.

Markle previously denied the allegations reported against him, calling them “sick lies,” according to Reuters. That denial preceded the latest federal charge.

What happens next

The criminal complaint was filed in California. Reuters reported that arrangements for his transfer there remained uncertain. A confirmed date for his next appearance was not established in the reporting cited here.

The distinction matters: authorities have confirmed an arrest and a charge. A court has not determined guilt. Future reporting should follow the court record, the defense response and any additional official findings.
